Introduction to the Dee Valley
Historically the valley has been visited and revisited from very ancient times. There are Iron Age forts, Roman ruins, Christian settlements, Pagan monuments, Dark Age Castles, Saxon monuments, Welsh Prince hunting lodges, magnificent mansions, perfectly preserved castles, the historic stagecoach road route from London to Ireland, the largest natural lake in Wales and all this in an area about 40 miles long and no more than 3 miles wide.
There used to be a steam tramway and two steam railway branch lines. There is a very picturesque canal and two main rivers, one is the River Dee, the ‘sacred’ river of Wales and all have attracted the notice of writers, poets, artists and photographers over the generations - prepare to be inspired!
